I’ve been beating my head against a wall wondering how it’s possible that my audience has been consistently growing, yet book sales have not (to put it mildly).
Well, in digging into the stats on my audience across social media… the answer became obvious: My audience is over 80% male. And my books (at least on the surface) appeal primarily to women.
Sales of the Mason Timeline series have picked up (because I changed the covers, I suspect). But The Prince’s Pawn is absolutely a female-centric book and I haven’t sold a copy in months.
Likewise, though the Siren Song series is a gender-neutral paranormal mystery, the protagonist is a woman, and paranormal as a whole is perceived as female-centric. Sales have been slow there as well, despite my new, edgy book trailer.
Can I blame the guys for not giving it a try if they think I’m not writing for them?
So what’s an author to do?
A Minor Pivot
As of now, I have limited myself to 2 works in progress. Treason of Fate (Mason Timeline 4) will have to be re-written from scratch and it’s still in the works.
But the first priority is a thriller that I have plotted and plan to have out this year. It is called <drumroll> The Twitter Crush:
Jackson Reed has built an empire ghostwriting bestsellers for the women’s empowerment industry. Known only by his social media handle @HeforSheWrites, he’s the "queen-maker" behind today's feminist superstars, crafting manifestos he secretly hates while enjoying an endless stream of admirers.
Then his latest client’s critics start disappearing.
It begins after their book launch and an unexpected night together, ending with an easy goodbye. But when podcasters and YouTubers who challenge Irina Sterling’s teachings vanish without a trace, Jackson realizes he knows nothing about the woman he spent six months interviewing.
Drawing on his skills from his military past, Jackson starts investigating the disappearances, searching for Irina’s true identity. But the deeper he digs, the clearer it becomes: Irina isn’t just selling empowerment, she’s enforcing it.
Caught between exposing the truth and protecting his lucrative career, Jackson faces impossible choices as the boundaries between professional ethics and personal safety collapse. If he reveals what he knows, he'll destroy his career and the empire he helped build.
If he remains silent, more men might disappear – and he might be next.
I’m excited to get started, as thrillers and police procedurals make up the bulk of my leisure reading.
So what do you think? Is this something you’d like to read or were you more excited about the next paranormal romance?
How active are you on TikTok? Specifically the sub community within it booktok, extremely high female audience to tap into. It’s a world unto itself, but that’s where I have found female readers.
This is so something that I would read—looking forward to it.
