Location: Memphis, TN - Beale Street Coffee House
Interview Subject: Keisha Williams, Administrator of Terrence Broward HS Class of 2007 Facebook Page
[TIMESTAMP: 00:00:00]
[Wide shot of coffee shop interior. MARCUS behind camera, JACKSON and KEISHA at small table]
Marcus [off-camera]: Alright, we're rolling. Can you state your name for the record?
Keisha: Keisha Williams. K-E-I-S-H-A. I run the Facebook alumni page for Terrence Broward High School, class of 2007.
[Keisha smooths her dress, smiles at Jackson]
Marcus: And you went to school with Crystal Barnett?
Keisha: Oh yeah, we all knew Crystal. I mean, we only had like four white kids in the whole school, so we knew all they names. [laughs] She was quiet, you know? Kept to herself mostly. Didn't bother nobody.
Jackson: But people bothered her?
Keisha: [leans toward Jackson] Well, you know how kids are. Being kinda... well, she wasn't the prettiest girl, and being one of the only white girls? Yeah, lotta folks bothered her. Her mama worked two, three jobs. Trailer park kid. Easy target.
[TIMESTAMP: 00:02:34]
Marcus: What about friends? Boyfriends?
Keisha: Crystal? Nah, not really. I mean, maybe she had friends in JROTC or whatever, but socially? She was a ghost. [pauses, touches Jackson's arm] You sure you ain't from Memphis? You look familiar.
Jackson: [smiles] No, first time here. But I'm starting to think I should've visited sooner.
Keisha: [laughs] Oh, you got game. Well, Memphis is full of surprises. You should let me show you around. I know all the spots tourists don't.
Jackson: I might take you up on that.
[TIMESTAMP: 00:04:17]
Marcus: Speaking of 2007, anything significant happen your senior year?
Keisha: [expression changes] Oh. You mean Terrell.
Jackson: Terrell?
Keisha: Terrell Washington. We're actually planning a memorial section for him at our next reunion. He was murdered right after homecoming. October 2006.
Marcus: Murdered?
Keisha: [nods] It was... bad. Real bad. They found him in pieces. Sorry, that's graphic, but that's what happened. Never caught who did it. No suspects, nothing. Broke the whole school up.
[TIMESTAMP: 00:06:45]
Jackson: Was he connected to Crystal at all? Friend? Boyfriend?
Keisha: Crystal? No, no. Terrell was popular, played basketball. Far as I know, they never even talked. Look, the neighborhood's rough. I mean [gestures out the window] you see that. Murders happen. But Terrell wasn't in the streets like that. Good kid. Was going to community college.
Marcus: You said murders happen. Were there others?
Keisha: [sighs] Yeah, few months later. February 2007. Mr. Park, worked at the gas station on Poplar. Mixed guy. Blasian. Kind of a mean ol’ cuss but hell, kids from the school robbed him blind, so I can't say I blame him. Same thing happened to him.
[Jackson and Marcus exchange looks]
Jackson: Wait, come again? Same thing?
[TIMESTAMP: 00:08:22]
Keisha: Cut up the same way. Dismembered. I remember 'cause my mama was scared to let me get gas there anymore. Said whoever was doing it had a taste for it now. She watched crime shows a lot. She was white too. In case you couldn’t tell.
Marcus: Were there any connections between the victims?
Keisha: Mr. Park and Terrell? Nah, not that anyone knew. Different neighborhoods, different everything. Police said it might be gang initiation, but... [shakes head] that ain’t how gangs ‘round here roll. That’s cartel bullshit.
Jackson: Any other deaths like that?
Keisha: [thinks] There was that homeless man summer before senior year. Found him by the railroad tracks all cut— [stops herself] Why you asking about all this old stuff?
[TIMESTAMP: 00:10:51]
Marcus: We're trying to understand Crystal's background. For context.
Keisha: [looks suspicious] Crystal never hurt nobody. These murders... that was some psycho shit. Probably some grown man, you know? They never catch those types.
[She touches Jackson's hand again]
Keisha: But hey, enough about all that darkness. You staying in town long? I know a lot more about Crystal, and everyone else in our class. [gives Jackson her phone] Put your number in there.
Jackson: [taking phone, grinning] How do you know I'm not some psycho?
Keisha: [laughs] Please. I can read people. You're one of the good ones. Plus, I got connections all over this city - police, city hall, you name it. Might be useful for... whatever you're really investigating.
Marcus: [off-camera] She's got your number.
Jackson: [entering his number] Looks like we both might have something the other wants.
Keisha: Mmm-hmm. I'll text you later. And if you need anything - I know people.
[TIMESTAMP: 00:12:33]
[Marcus turns camera to himself]
Marcus: Three dismemberment murders. Same time Crystal Barnett was in high school. Same neighborhood. No suspects ever identified. [pause] We need to pull police reports.
[Camera turns back to Jackson, who looks pale]
Jackson: Pattern established. If she had something to do with this at 17, what the hell is she now?
